Welcome:

  • Cindylynn welcomed everyone to the FOMAHI Board meeting.

Approval of Minutes:

  • Due to low attendance, the November Meeting Minutes were not voted on.  They will be presented and voted on at the January FOMAHI Board meeting.

Treasurer’s Report:  Karen Selboe

  • Income for November was reviewed.  Highlights:  $100 donation; Escrip $17.73; Amazon.com $20.02; merchandise sales $770; Jr. Jazz fees $550; concessions $468.  Total income:  $2,323.70.
  • Expenses for November were reviewed:  Highlights:  Jr. Jazz payment $1,025; ensemble instruction $430; instrument repairs $276.73; festival fees $945; sheet music $456.34.  Total program expenses:  $4,919.95.
  • Tax preparation fees for last year:  $500.
  • There are some extra Vocal Jazz t-shirts left from the fall order.  They could be sold at the next jazz performance.  Lary will save a few for new students.
  • The Archibald grant was submitted.  The grant requests $15,000 that would be used to purchase instruments.  It can take up to six months to hear back about our request.

Director’s Reports:

Lary Barilleau, Vocal Jazz Director

  • Vocal Jazz is progressing well and their concert was great.  Lary hopes to have five new tunes for the next performance.  There are now 31 students in the class.
  • There is a parent who works at KING television who has arranged for Vocal Jazz to perform on Wednesday, December 21st in the KING lobby.  They will be featured live on the noon news broadcast and for KING staff members.

Dan Rowe, Band Director

  • The Winter Band Concert was a success and the Lincoln High School auditorium worked well.  The band may play for a Hamilton basketball game and a student wants to direct this.
  • Jr. Jazz is progressing well.  The Jazz performance went too long and Dan will work to reduce it for next time.  Sr. Jazz has three combos going now.
  • The next band performance will be the UW Band Festival on January 30th.  Our students need to be there at 8:00AM to warm up and will perform at 8:30AM.  The transportation is currently being worked out (private bus vs. Metro bus).
  • The Junior High Solo and Ensemble Festival will be held at Timbercrest Jr. High on February 4th.  Forty of our music students will be performing.
  • Hamilton will host the SPS Middle School Jazz Festival on March 8th 7:00-9:00PM in the Lincoln auditorium.  There was discussion about naming it the “Hamilton World Jazz Night.”  Dan and Lary will be inviting other schools to perform.
  • The Bellevue Jazz Festival (formerly the Viking Jazz Festival) will be held on February 3rd.

Mika Armaly, Orchestra and Choir Director

  • The Winter Orchestra and Choir Winter Concert went well, and the students have improved since the Eckstein Symposium.
  • The Garfield High School orchestra performed at Hamilton yesterday.
  • Next up is the Music-a-thon on January 19th and their Orchestra Clinic at Camp Burton on February 3rd.

Committee Reports

  • Amy Liddicoat – Preparations are under way for the Lionel Hampton Festival.  She has reserved rooms and has bought tickets.
  • Alicia Edger – She needs the Jr. Jazz attendance sheets from Dan so she knows who is attending.  She also brought up the question of whether we need monthly FOMAHI communication for the music families.  This could include information about various FOMAHI performances and events, something like a monthly note from the FOMAHI president.  It could allow families to have more information about what other Hamilton music groups are doing.  There was discussion about this, and it might be something to look into for next fall.

Old Business

  • PE Waiver Update – Cindylynn emailed Ms. Peila to find out how many students didn’t turn in a PE waiver.  Ms. Peila said that she’s still working on it and she’ll post the information soon.  Mika noted that she knows a handful of students who didn’t turn it in.  Students who didn’t get a PE waiver will assigned to a class other than music next semester, whatever class has space available.
  • FOMAHI website audio/video posting – We haven’t received permission slips from all music students.  Liza has been working to get as many completed as possible.  The form that was used in the fall wasn’t worded clearly, so we’ll look into a new form for next fall.  There was also discussion about whether audio recordings and the use of some photos could be used this year.  Could we use a class page on the Fusion site or have it on the main Fusion page?  No decisions were made, but there needs to be discussions with Liza about what can be done this year.

New Business

  • Music-a-thon packets will go home with students on January 6th.  The Young Musicians Concert will be held on January 19th as the culminating event.  Dan gave a run-down of the Music-a-thon day.  Music students will play during their regular class time.  Jr. Jazz will play after school until 4:30.  Volunteer performers will be needed from 4:30-7:00PM for 30 minutes periods.  7:00-8:00PM will be the Young Musicians Concert for solos and ensembles.   Lary is not able to be at Hamilton that evening.  There will still be prizes for students who do fundraising.
  • Upcoming trips and festivals – We need a coordinator for the end of the year Wild Waves trip.  Alicia Edger will assist the coordinator.

Next meeting:  January 11th at 7:00p.m.

Meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
