Concert Band Descriptions

Beginning Band

This class is directed at students who have little or no instrumental music training. There will be time given to allow students to explore the instrument choices to better help them make the right decision on what they will choose for the year. Students will learn essential concepts and skills and will perform in two school concerts.

Cadet Band

This ensemble requires at least one year of experience and teacher approval. In this class students will gain experience in skills and concepts related to being in band. There will be two concerts scheduled during the year for this group.

Concert Band

This ensemble requires an audition and at least two years experience or teacher approval. Students will expand their knowledge and skills through instrumental technique and literature.  There will be two school concerts as well as other festivals and performances outside of school. Travel will be required.

Symphonic Band

This is the highest level ensemble and requires an audition and at least three years experience or teacher approval. Students will rehearse and perform upper level middle school and high school literature. Besides the two school concerts, there will be several performing opportunities at festivals and concerts. Travel will be required.  Give a listen to Symphonic Band's performance at the 2010 UW Band Festival.

Classroom Policies

  1. Be prepared with instrument, music and pencil. You will be graded on your readiness.
  2. You have five minutes after the bell to be in your seat and ready to play.
  3. Show respect for your classmates, equipment, teaching staff and rehearsal time.
  4.  There will be required practice records for all Beginning and Cadet band students. There will not be a required practice record for Concert, Symphonic and Senior Jazz Band students. However, they are expected to practice 2 hours per week
