Orchestra Class Materials

Instruments

Students will bring their own instrument or agree to use a school owned instrument for the year. Students will store their instruments in their assigned shelf during school hours and retrieve them after school. The orchestra room will open at 7:45 a.m. and close at 2:45 p.m.

Please be sure your instrument meets these requirements:

  • Pegs that turn easily and hold tune
  • Bridge that stands straight and curves to bow one string at a time
  • Proper string height at nut and bridge
  • Proper sound post placement
  • Fine tuners that work on the tailpiece
  • Good bow with horsehair and a screw that turns easily to tighten and loosen the horsehair

Instrument Accessories

  • Strings (1 set)
  • KUN shoulder rest (violins and violas)
  • Cello/ Bass rock stop
  • Rosin
  • Cleaning cloth

Beginning Orchestra will need the String Explorer Book 1 for their instrument. You can purchase these books from Amazon.com and support FOMAHI at the same time. (FOMAHI gets a percent of any purchases with Amazon made through these links).

All orchestra students will need a lined notebook, pencil with AN ERASER and a music stand for practice at home.

We have listed several reputable stores that deal in the rental of instruments and the sale of equipment. You may, of course, use any store of your choice. It is suggested that you phone the store before making a trip to inquire about the availability of your choice of instrument and needed accessories. Your child will need to have his/her instrument and equipment ready for class as soon as possible.

Instrument Maintenance

Please keep all stringed instruments in a moderate temperature-controlled environment. Wash your hands before playing any instrument. After playing your instrument, wipe off fingerprints and rosin dust with a soft cloth.

PLEASE INFORM YOUR TEACHER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, BEFORE THE START OF SCHOOL IF YOU CAN, if something happens to your instrument. It will allow your teacher time to inspect it before your music class.
